She spent over 150 years buried in the sands of Te Oneone Rangatira on the West Coast of New Zealand, where she lay until a storm uncovered her in May 2018. Identified as a unique piece of New Zealand maritime history, with the consent of Heritage New Zealand, the Daring Rescue group embarked on an extensive job of recovering her. On May 4th 2021, the Daring was returned home to Mangawhai and transferred to the safe keeping of the Mangawhai Daring Trust who continue with her preservation work to make her available for public 1863 on the shores of Mangawhai harbour by the young Nova Scotian migrant Donald McInnes. The Daring was built as a coastal trader (the only bulk transport method available in the era) to transport freight and people around New Zealand. After an initial few months trading between Wellington, Lyttleton and Timaru the Daring returned to Auckland where she was sold in January 1864 to West Coast shipper David Kirkwood. In early 1864 she was purchased by David Kirkwood where soon after she was stranded on the bar at Waikato Heads. After being reported as a full wreck, a 500 pound insurance enabled her repair. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a5a63dd44de70b18ee98d1/1655070611635-YX65TEK4R0EAJ7FOCIZU/Screen+Shot+2022-06-13+at+9.47.36+AM.png History - David Kirkwood, a migrant originally from Scotland, was well connected within local communities, fluent in Te Reo he involved local people in the attempt to re-float the Daring and was famed for helping return escaped Maori prisoners to their villages in Kawhia during the New Zealand wars. On 21st February 1865 the Daring was aground again in a controlled beaching after being caught in a strong wind. The skipper considered this the better option rather than risking loss of boat and life on the Kaipara Bar. After unsuccessful attempts to re-float her she was abandoned and soon became buried in the sand dunes where she lay in perfect condition until a storm uncovered her in May 2018.
